Sand Sigh (2024). Silver-gelatin photographic papers exposed to lake water, sand, and shoreline debris (dimensions variable); silver-gelatin photograph (20x24 inches) | The images in Sand Sigh were made during ongoing visits to Gibraltar Point Beach, along the southern edge of the Toronto Islands. This is a dynamic, living landscape that changes easily with the weather, revealing natural patterns and material relics. To make a record of this shifting shoreline, light-sensitive photographic papers have been pressed directly into the liminal space where the sand meets the water, exposing in place for the duration of a few deep breaths. The movement of these elements are recorded on the paper’s surface, producing images that expand beyond the singular frame to contain motion and the passage of time. Exhibited in the Vitrines at Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography, January 5 - February 3, 2024. Made with the support of the Ontario Arts Council.
